Access to a network of knowledgeable people, an office workspace with new computers, and advice for your game project from professional mentors?

LGIN Incubation Track application period is open! We asked the previous teams about their experience in the game incubator. Roni and Roni, two information and communication technology students from Metropolia UAS shared their thoughts about LGIN:

Introduction. Who are you?

Hi! We are Roni and Roni, two students from Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. We’re both studying information and communication technology and majoring in game applications. We found out about the incubation track through Suvi Kiviniemi’s Introduction to Game Business course, and decided to apply as it was a good opportunity to add to our game development experience (and accumulate student credits).

What have you gained from LGIN Incubation Track?

We’ve been given access to a network of knowledgeable people, an office workspace with new computers, and advice for our game project from a mentor appointed to us based on our specific needs (Anton Petrushenkov).

Which stage was your business idea on when you joined?

When we joined the Incubation Track, there were three of us in the team. We had a barebones concept for a game project but nothing in active development yet. We started working from scratch, which was equally exciting and demanding. Our business idea was – and continues to be – very much work-in-progress. We want to hone the game concept first before pursuing any business opportunities.

Would you do something differently if you’d start your project now? Were there any surprises?

We would decide on a set amount of goals to focus on from the get-go instead of starting work on every idea simultaneously; after we had settled on a plan for an MVP for our project with our mentor, working felt more organized and focused. Upon reaching the goals we had set for the MVP, we still had some time to implement things initially left out of the plan, which was a welcome surprise.

Do you have any tips for the teams who are thinking of applying?

If you are hesitant about whether or not to apply, don’t be. Plenty of resources are available, including ample office space and mentors that can guide your project toward the right path. The LGIN Incubation Track provides a good opportunity for up-and-coming developers and entrepreneurs alike to see what it’s like to run a game studio without the risks that come with the real deal.

The Incubation Track provides flexibility for those that have prior engagements, such as a day job. While we have been working relatively full-time, it’s up to each team to decide how they distribute the workload. It also wasn’t an issue for us to continue development even when our team size decreased, which is to say that the Track accommodates to changing situations.
